Peter Maund is a superb percussionist who plays everything from medieval and Renaissance music to modern Celtic and other folk music. He has recorded with the early music group Ensemble Alcatraz and with Alasdair Fraser's band Skydance, among others. He's also an excellent, patient, and fun-loving teacher.

This six-week class will focus on the Cantigas de Santa Marķa from the 13th century Spanish codex of King Alfonso X ("El Sabio"). Peter will bring a variety of cantigas, dances, and other monophonic pieces for us to play and explore. The emphasis will be on improvisation and building arrangements based on the skills, interests, and ideas of the musicians present.
All instrumentalists with an interest in medieval music are welcome. Vocalists are welcome as well, but be aware that there will be a lot of instrumental music happening. You should be able to play or sing simple melodies from modern notation and be unafraid to experiment and make mistakes. If there's sufficient interest, the class ensemble will do an informal public performance at the conclusion of the six-week session.
Refreshments will be provided at each class.
Send e-mail to Peter if you'd like more information or want to sign up for the class.
Thanks to the San Francisco Early Music Society for helping to publicize this class.
Peter doesn't currently have any percussion classes scheduled. Send e-mail to Peter if you're interested.
